The Cerro Rico of Potosí become a secular icon soon after Pedro de Cieza de León published a woodcut image of it in Seville in 1553. As a result of this image and the fabulous news that accompanied it, many artists tried their hand at representing the Rich Hill as well as the Imperial Villa.
